The term ashtanga yoga or raja yoga makes reference to an eight step (asta: 'eight' and anga: 'member') technique described by the sage Patanjali in his yoga sutras around 400 b.C. through which human being may reach liberation (moksha) by breaking the chains of ignorance (avidya) that make him identify changing matter (prakriti) with eternal spirit (purusa).

On the other hand, the term Ashtanga Yoga or Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga makes reference to the yoga style that Sri Krishna Pattabhi Jois created during the 20th century in Mysore, basing on a mysterious medieval text called yoga korunta that was passed on to him by his guru Tirumalai Krishnamacharya and that nowadays it is thought to have been lost.

In reality, all yoga styles that are practised in the world have their roots in Patanjali's ashtanga yoga. Confusion between Patanjali's ashtanga yoga and Pattabhi Jois' Ashtanga Yoga arises from the naming used by Westerners who travelled to Mysore to practise with Pattabhi Jois and which would eventually become widespread. If it wasn't enough with the context, in order to make out one from the other capital letters are usually used like in this paragraph.

Ashtanga yoga edo raja yoga terminoak zortzi urrats (asta: 'zortzi' eta anga: 'adar') teknika adierazten du Patanjali jakintsuak bere yoga sutr-etan 400 K.a. ingurunean deskribatua. Teknika honen bidez, gizakiak askapena (moksha) lor omen ahal du aldakor materia (prakriti) eta betiereko arima (purusa) berdinarazten zaion ezjakintasun (avidya) kateak apurtuz.

Bestalde, Ashtanga Yoga edo Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga terminoak Sri Krishna Pattabhi Joisek 20garren mendean Mysoren sortu zuen yoga mota adierazten du. Bere guru Tirimulai Krishnamacharyak gauregun galdua sinesten den yoga korunta izeneko erdi aroko misteriotso testu bat eman zion, eta Pattabhi Joisek erabili zuen bere estiloa sortzeko.

Egia esan, munduan praktikatzen ari diren yoga estilo guztiek Patanjaliren ashtanga yoga-n sustraiak dauzkate. Nahasketa Patanjaliren ashtanga yoga-n eta Pattabhi Joisen Ashtanga Yoga-n Mysorera Pattabhi Joisekin praktikatzera zihoazen mendebaldekoek erabiliriko eta orokorra bihurtuko zen nomenklaturatik dator. Testuingurua nahikoa izango ez balitz, bata eta bestea bereizteko hemen egin den moduan letra larriak erabil daitezke.

Sri Krishna Patthabi Jois (1915-2009), affectionately known as Guruji -dear teacher- by his students, was a university teacher of sanscrit, a yoga master and the creator of Ashtanga Yoga style.

Patthabi Jois became an early disciple of Tirimulai Krishnamacharya, reputed phiilosopher and yoga master who is nowadays credited as the “father of modern yoga” for having played a key role in its revitalisation during the 20th century. Several of his disciples, among them Pattabhi Jois, would end up creating worldwide impact yoga schools.

Patthabi Jois started teaching yoga in Mysore under the guardianship of Krishnamacharya. From him, he would get the knowledge of yoga korunta, a today forgotten text in which several groups of asanas and the concepts of vinyasa, dristhi and bandha were described, all on which Pattabhi Jois would later base to create his Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga style.

In 1948 Pattabhi Jois founded the Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute in his own house. In 1964, a traveller from Belgium practised yoga with him for two months and later published a travel book in which Pattabhi Jois' yoga school was mentioned. That meant the beginning of the international spread of Ashtanga Yoga.

Foreign students started arriving in increasing numbers. From 1974, Pattabhi Jois would regularly travel to West to teach Ashtanga Yoga. In 2002 he moved to a bigger house in the neighbourhood of Gokulam in order to be able to accomodate more students.

After over 60 years teaching yoga, at the age of 94, Guruji passed away on the 18th of May 2009, leaving behing a huge legacy. R. Sharath Jois, his grandson and disciple for twenty five years, received the baton and hitherto manages the Krishna Pattabhi Jois Ashtanga Yoga Institute.

Sri Krishna Patthabi Jois (1915-2009), bere ikasleek Guruji –maisu maitea- maitekorrez ezaguna, unibertsitateko sanskrito irakaslea, yoga maisua eta Ashtanga Yoga estiloa sortzailea da.

Pattabhi Jois Tirimulai Krishnamacharyaren goiztiar dizipulua bihurtu zen. Krishnamacharya filosofo ospetsu eta yoga maisua zen. Gaur egun "yoga modernuaren aita"-tzat hartzen zaio haren bizkortzera 20garren mendean laguntzeagatik. Krishnamachyaren dizipulu askok, haien artean Pattabhi Joisek, nazioarteko oihartzun yoga eskolak sortzen bukatuko lituzkete.

Patthabi Jois Mysoren Krisnamacharyaren babespean yoga irakasten hasi zen. Berarengandik yoga korunta ezaguerak jaso zituen. Gauregun galdua omen den testu horretan asana elkartze askotariko eta vinyasa, dristhi eta bandha kontzeptuak deskribatzen ziren. Pattabhi Jois bere Ashtanga Vinyasa estiloa hartan oinarritu zen.

1948an Pattabhi Joisek Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute ireki zuen bere etxean. 1964an, Belgikako bidaiari batek berarekin bi hilabetetan zehar yoga praktikatu zuen eta gero Pattabhi Joisen yoga eskola aipatu zuen liburu bat argitaratu zuen. Hark Ashtanga Yoga nazioarteko hedapenaren hasiera ekarri zuen.

Gero eta ikasle atzerritar gehiago heltzen hasi ziren. 1974tik aurrera, Pattabhi Jois mendebaldera aldizka bidaiatuko zen Ashtanga Yoga irakasteko. 2002an Gokulam auzategira ikasle gehiago barne hartu gai izateko etxe haundi batera mugitu zen.

60 urte baino gehiagotan yoga irakatsi ondoren, 94 urteekin, 2009ko maiatzaren 18an Guruji hil zen. Atzean legatu izugarria utzi zuen. R. Sharath Jois-ek, bere biloba eta dizipulua hogeita bost urteetan zehar, testigua hartu zuen eta Krishna Pattabhi Jois Ashtanga Yoga Institute zuzentzen du gaur arte.

Pattabhi Jois' Ashtanga Yoga is known for its linked movements sequences, for the sound of its pneumatic breath and for the sweat it generates. It's a discipline conceived to throw out toxins stored in the skin, muscles and organs and keep a flexible and fit body.

There are three groups of postures or asana sequences: First or primary series (Yoga Chikitsa) is conceived to heal, cleanse and tonify the body. Second or intermediate series (Nadi Shodana) is focused on the purification of the nervous system. Finally, last four advanced series (Sthira Bhaga), provide strength and stability. Asans sequences comprise an increasingly higher level of challenge and are designed in a way that previous postures "get ready" the body for the following ones.

One customary class of Ashtanga Yoga starts with sun salutions A and B and goes through the standing sequence and the floor sequence till the finishing sequence. Primary series comprises around forty postures. The student learns the series posture by posture under the supervision and guide of the teacher, who decides the moment in which the student is ready to learn the following asana.

The powerful movements of Ashtanga Yoga are just the outer layer of an interior trip. Main key of Ashtanga Yoga lies in the concept of Tristana, which comprises three internal elements:

    • Vinyasa: Movements linked with a purpose, like the beads of a rosary or mala, and at every time governed by the conductive wire of the practice: breath, that must be free, deep and slightly vibrating.
    • Bandha: Subtle muscular contractions of the abdomen and pelvic floor which provide stability in asanas, hold the breath and serve as energetic locks, like the opposite poles of a battery between which energy flows.
    • Dristhi: Focus point of the sight that helps to keep concentration.

When managing the union of these three internal elements is when the lotus flower of Ashtanga Yoga opens its petals, the body moves effortless and the center of attention moves from the outside to the inside, laying the bridge that takes the essence of the practice from the mat to daily life. Fruits of Ashtanga Yoga are health, wellbeing, mindfulness, creativity and inner peace.

Pattabhi Joisen Ashtanga Yoga bere mugimendu lotu-engatik, bere arnasa pneumatikarengatik eta sortzen duen izerdiarengatik ezagutua da. Azalean, giharretan eta organoetan gordetzen diren toxinak kanporatzeko eta gorputza osasuntsu eta malgu mantentzeko pentsatutako diziplina da.

Jarrera edo asana hiru segida multzo daude: Lehenengo seriea (Yoga Chikitsa) sendatzera, garbitzera eta bizkortzera zuzenduta dago. Bigarren edo erdiko serieak (Nadi Shodana) nerbio-sistema garbiketan arreta jartzen du. Azkenik, lau serie aurreratuek (Sthira Bhaga), indarra eta egonkortasuna ematen dute. Asana segidek geroz eta erronka maila handiagoa daukate eta aurreko jarrerak gorputza hurrengoentzako "prestatzeko" disenatuak dira.

Ashtanga Yoga klase arrunta A eta B eguzki agurrekin hasten da eta zutik ta zoru segidan zehar amaierako segidara arte jarraitzen du. Lehenengo serie berrogei jarrera inguru osatzen ditu. Ikasleak segida jarreraz jarrera irakaslearen arreta eta gida menpean ikasten du. Ikasleak hurrengo asana ikasteko prestatuta noiz dagoen erabakitzen duena irakaslea da.

Ashtanga Yoga mugimendu indartsuak barruko bidaiko kanpoko geruza dira bakarrik. Ashtanga Yogaren giltza nagusia Tristana kontzeptuan datza, hiru barneko osagaiak osatua:

    • Vinyasa: Asmo batekin loturiko mugimenduak, arrosario edo mala bihiak bezalakoak, eta denbora guztian praktika hari eroaleak agindua: arnasa; askea, sakona eta dardarkari samarra izan behar duena.
    • Bandha: Sabelako eta pelbis zoruko muskulu-uzkurdura ikusezinak. Asan-etan egonkortasuna ematen duten, arnasari eusten dioten eta energia giltzak balio dituzte, energia haien arteko darion bateriaren bi poloak bezalakoak izango balira.
    • Dristhi: Kontzentrazioa mantentzen laguntzen duen ikusmenaren ikuspegi puntua.

Hiru barruko osagai hauen batasuna lortzean Ashtanga Yoga loto loreak bete petaloak irekitzen ditu, gorputza ahalegin gabe mugitzen da eta arreta zentroa kanpotik barrura aldatzen da, praktikaren funtsak zerritik eguneroko bizitzara daraman zubia eraikiz. Ashtanga Yogaren fruituak osasuna, ondasuna, ernetasuna, sormena eta barruko bakea dira.
